Books on airway management can be categorized by content, focus, and intended audience. Some texts aim to be encyclopedic, while others focus primarily on specific techniques. A growing group of texts address emergency airway management. There are also some great on-line resources—available for free--that provide a historical perspective on direct laryngoscopy. Books we recommend are listed below, broken down by category.
Airway Cam materials have an emergency airway management focus and include direct laryngoscopy imaging. The Airway Cam Guide to Intubation and Practical Emergency Airway Management provides a practical approach to first pass intubation success. Techniques, airway anatomy, and case examples are illustrated using more than 450 full color photographs, including step-by-step laryngoscopy images from Dr. Levitan's patented Airway Cam. This head-mounted camera aligns with the dominant pupil and permits imaging of laryngoscopy from the operator's perspective.
Explains the importance of finding the epiglottis first and recognizing laryngeal landmarks, especially the posterior cartilages and interarytenoid notch.
Provides an overall laryngoscopy strategy with fast and effective maneuvers for improving laryngeal view—bimanual laryngoscopy, head-elevated laryngoscopy positioning, and straight-to-cuff stylet shaping.
Offers clear guidelines on when to avoid RSI and use awake approaches.
Covers special clinical challenges, and the selection of laryngoscopy equipment and alternative devices.
Includes nasal intubation, surgical approaches, pediatric laryngoscopy, and creating practical emergency airway kits.
Paperback, 324 pages, size 9 x 6 inches. ISBN-10: 1929018126 ISBN-13: 978-1929018123.
REVIEWS:
Above all, this text lives up to its promise and provides a practical approach to airway management in the emergency setting as well as a step-by-step visual guide to laryngoscopy. The Airway Cam images, combined with the very complete discussion of airway anatomy constitute wonderful preparation for those about to perform intubation for the first time, for novice intubators, and for experienced laryngoscopists wanting a thorough review. We have not seen anything akin to the images produced by the Airway Cam in any other text or educational material. First and foremost, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then the Airway Cam images used in this book are worth millions. In addition to the outstanding pictures, we found the strategy/algorithm described in the book concise, logical, and easy to apply. The author's emphasis on a methodic approach, redundancy of safety, and having a precise backup/rescue plan is something we believe all emergency physicians should embrace. In our opinion, this volume belongs on the bookshelf of every emergency physician (or more broadly, on the bookshelves of all those called upon to manage airways on an emergency basis).
